Advantages
What many users of hydraulics don't know or have forgotten, is that water hydraulics is the true origin of hydraulics. In fact oil hydraulics was developed long after water hydraulics was firmly established, largely due to the need for lubrication in the early axial piston pumps.
Even today water hydraulics often presents the technologically more sensible alternative. For many manufacturing processes the physical and chemical properties of water as a hydraulic medium, compared with those of oil, offer considerable advantages. Expensive fire prevention measures are not required, nor is the storage of inflammable oils, with their associated statutory requirements.
The physical characteristics of water also ensure markedly better transmission of forces - end-result, a more
efficient system.
With many facilities the use of oil hydraulics places the product at risk, such as in engineered wood, rubber and aluminium industries. The use of water hydraulics removes this problem. Water hydraulics can be found in many application areas, with a strong concentration in the heavy press industry and general hot-forming applications.
